Francis Distance was born in York 15-5-1898 & enlisted in to the Royal Navy as a boy in 1914. He was killed in action at the battle of Jutland 31-5-1916 whilst serving onboard HMS Defence & is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval memorial. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Arthur & Hannah Distance of 15 Prospect Gardens, Bishophill, York & that he was a native of Buttercrambe, Yorks.
