Edward Smith was born in Preston in 1880 & was serving with a militia battalion of the East Lancashire regiment when he enlisted for service in 1898. He served in South Africa during the Boer war of 1899-1902 & remained in the army until taking his discharge in 1910. He married in Acrrington in 1905 & by the outbreak of WW1 he had fathered three children & was living with his wife Charlotte in Accrington. He enlisted in to the Royal Field Artillery on the outbreak of war & shave a couple of years of his date of birth & stated he was born in 1882. He first landed in France 19-5-1915 & transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 with service number 129825. He served in France 1915-1919 & was discharged in 1920. He was actually awarded the French medal militaire in 1916 but this was a clerical error as the award should of been awarded to Edward Smith of the R.A.M.C as such his award was cancelled in the London gazette 29-6-1916. The box of issue for the Defence medal is addressed to 33 Mountsteven Avenue in Walton Peterborough & may possibly of been awarded to the recipients second son who was also named Edward and was born in 1907?
