Charles Edward Nicol was a resident of Bedale, Yorks & enlisted in Richmond, Yorks. He first landed in France 17-4-1915 serving with the 4th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment / Green Howards & was M.I.D for services in France with the battalion in the London gazette 15-6-1916. He went on to be awarded the MM also for services in France in the London gazette 11-10-1916 & then went on to transfer to the Machine Gun Corps. He was serving with the 150th Company M.G.C when he was awarded the DCM in the London gazette 18-7-1917 with the following citation.
For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. He covered the withdrawal of an exposed flank until his ammunition was all used. On the same day he volunteered and took up one gun to the threatened flank, under heavy barrage & remainded there until relived next day.
He was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 10-4-1918 age 26 & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Ploegsteert memorial. He is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of James & Fanny Nicol of Hornby castle gardens, Bedale, Yorks.
GVF or better & court mounted for wear by Spinks. Traces of old lacquer to all medals.
