Thomas Flattley was born in Stockton on Tees new years day 1-1-1941 & was living in Spennymoor when he enlisted into the R.A.O.C in 1941. He was awarded the B.E.M for services in North West Europe in the London gazette 21-6-1945 with the following recommendation.
This acting warrant officer has been Chief clerk to ADOS HQ 1 Corps troops ordnance for the whole of the present campaign. Throughout he has shown exemplary devotion to duty & a marked enthusiasm to assist, at all times, units under the command of the corps. During the last three months, owing to the exigencies of the campaign, the supply of Ordnance stores from the base has entailed the receipt of extremely large bulk allotments from army for splitting down & issue to formations under command. This has necessitated the centralization of all available personnel, and such others as could be mobilised from staff to help carry the tremendous load. Due to temporary re-organization the number of men under the direct command of ADOS office, including civilian attached labour has increased enormously, and administration and language difficulties accordingly. This has naturally placed a very heavy load on this WO. Who has ever shown himself ready to shoulder responsibilities far in excess of those normally demanded of a man of this rank. He has shown himself to be tactful in dealing with French & Belgian & now Dutch personnel attached to this unit and by his personal example has achieved great success in ensuring amicable relations between attached personnel living in close quarters. The same quality has been particularly evident in relations with allied formations under command including at times Americans, Poles, Belgians & Dutch. His cheerful disposition throughout the present campaign has been an example to all ranks. He has never failed to get the best out of those under him & personal burden and responsibility of his appointment have carried out with reliability and steadfastness.
