William Burton was born in Rochester 5-4-1873 & enlisted in to the Royal Navy in 1892. He served ashore from HMS Fame during the Boxer rebellion & onboard HMS Terrible during the Boer war. He did not have the best record of conduct & sadly whilst serving on HMS Bacchante at Malta in 1910 he attempted to hang himself. The Royal Navy did not dismiss him from the service and simply moved him to another ship. He left the service in early 1914 & went to become part of the RFR. He was almost immediately recalled for service in WW1 but spent the war at home & is only additionally entitled to the WW1 British War Medal.
