Robert Stead served with the 2nd royal Fusiliers in the Boer war & was attached to the Nigeria Regiment for service in East Africa. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for services in the Cameroons whilst attached to the 3rd Nigeria Regiment & this was published in the London gazette 14-1-1916. This was followed by the award of an M.I.D in the London gazette 31-5-1916 & went on to be commissioned in to his own unit. He was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry at Bwehoe-Chin 22-9-1917 & Mahiwa 18-10-1918 & this was published in the London gazette 22-7-1918.
The London gazette citation states it was for Conspicuous gallantry & excellent services rendered throughout the campaign & whilst the London gazette does not publish a citation for the award of the recipients Military Cross. With the Nigerians in German East Africa by W.D.Downes goes in to great detail and states that the recipients MC was for the two actions as stated above.
