Alfred Thomas Root was born in London 19-5-1880 & enlisted in to the Yorkshire Regiment / Green Howards 31-5-1894 as a 14 year old boy musician. He first landed in Cape Town 15-12-1899 serving with the 1st battalion & was severely wounded at the battle of Paaderberg 18-2-1900. He was hospitalised for three months but was sufficiently recovered to serve at the battle of Belfast in June. He returned home in October 1902 and was discharged in 1906.
