Samuel Edward Thomas Mears was born in Richmond, North Yorkshire & enlisted in to the Royal Tank Corps in 1937. He served at home from 18-9-37 to 8-5-1940 & then went to France with the B.E.F. He was evacuated from the beaches with the R.T.R 18-8-1940. He went to the Middle East 19-8-1940 with the 7th R.T.R & was captured on a raid in the Aegean 23-10-1943 whilst a member of the Long range desert group on M2 Watch at Astypalia / Stampalia. He was initially held as a prisoner of war in Italy & later moved on to a camp in Germany.He was released from captivity in April 1945 & served at home from 18-4-1945to 9-6-1946 when he took his discharge. He passed away in York district hospital 22-9-1995 age 74 whilst living in Harrogate.
The medals are later issue campaign stars with the large suspender ring & the group is court mounted as worn. Complete with a copy of The Long Range Desert Group in the Aegean by Brendan o'Carroll in which the recipient is mentioned twice and list in the nominal roll in the back of the book. Along with copy P.O.W roll details & a copy death certificate. Plus all the original paperwork as listed & other basic details.
