William Alexander Young was born in South Leith 1893 & first landed in France 24-2-1915 as a private with the 1/9th Royal Scots. He was commissioned in to the Black Watch in September 1915 & went with the 2nd battalion to Mesopotamia. He was twice wounded in action in Mesopotamia 7-1-1916 & 22-2-1917.He was awarded the MC for services in Mesopotamia in the London gazette 25-8-1917 for services between 27-8-16 &25-8-1917.He was M.I.D for services in Mesopotamia in the London gazette 30-4-1917 & again 15-8-1917. The battalion went on to serve in Palestine & he was again wounded 8-6-1918 & sadly died of his wounds two days later 10-6-1918. He is buried in Ramleh cemetery & is recorded by the CWGC as the late 25 year old son of James Young (Writer to the Signet) & Mrs. Young of 6 Arboretum Road, Edinburgh. He had been involved in almost every major action the battalion was involved in including the attack on Shaikh Saad, the third attack on Sannaiyat where he was the only surviving officer & was found with four bullet holes in his tunic. He is mentioned in the battalion history with a personal epitaph from the Colonel & was an old boy of Melville College.
