WW1 MILITARY CROSS (MC) & 1914-15 TRIO WITH M.I.D, 6th CAMERON HIGHLANDERS
WW1 Military Cross (MC) & 1914-15 Trio
To- CAPT.H.B.ROWAN.CAM'N.HIGHRS.
Harry Birkmyre Rowan was born in Glasgow 11-10-89 & was commissioned in to the Cameron Highlanders in September 1914. He first landed in France 9-7-1915 & was M.I.D by Sir John French for services in France on the 15th of October 1915 & this was published in the London gazette dated 1-1-1916. He went on to be awarded the Military Cross for his services with the 6th battalion at the battle of Cavalry farm at arras 26/27th April 1917 with the following citation.
For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. For a day & a half he took complete command of the forward operations. He was continuously backwards & forwards between the front line & the telephone, exposing himself to heavy machine gun & rifle fire. His sound judgement & prompt action undoubtably saved the situation.
He was presented the MC by the king at Buckingham palace 13-6-1917 & returned to the front a few days later. He was badly gassed on the night of July 12/13th 1918 & was discharged with a silver war badge in September 1918. He was a company director of Rowan & co Tailors & was very active in the battalion old comrades society. He served with the 12th home service battalion at the start of WW2. However his age & health got the better of him & he once again had to relinquish his commission in 1942. He sadly passed away in 1967 whilst visiting family in South Africa.
The reverse of the MC is neatly engraved
