James Doherty was born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire 23-8-1897 & enlisted under the Derby scheme in 1915. He first landed in France 31-8-1917 serving with A company of the 6th Cameron Highlanders. He was awarded the MM in the London gazette 27-6-18 for his notable gallantry as a Lewis gunner in halting a mass enemy attack towards Arras 28-3-1918 as part of the March offensive. He was discharged at the wars end & returned to Barrhead where he passed away in 1958. He was a founder member of the local branch of the British Legion & was town officer for Barrhead from 1948 until his death.
GVF or better & complete with extensive military & biographical research details including details from the regimental history with regards to his actions for the award of the MM. The 6th battalion was awarded 85 Military Medals in WW1 out of a total of 464 to the regiment. This is roughly half the total amount of MIlitary Medals to any other Scottish infantry regiment. Hence Military Medals to the Cameron Highlanders can be considered scarce if not rare?
