Roland Howard Crooke from Cheltenham enlisted in to the London Division of the R.N.V.R & went on to serve with the Hawke battalion of the Royal Naval Division on Gallipoli where he was wounded by gun shot to his left arm 14-6-1915. He returned to the UK & was discharged in September of the same year. He was one of three brothers from Cheltenham who were all educated at Cheltenham college & Emanuel college Cambridge. His two brothers were both KIA serving as officers with the Gloucester Regiment & the Royal Engineers. All three brothers appear in the book, leaving all that was dear to them.
