WW1 Memorial Plaque
To- CHARLES.ERIC.HATFIELD.
The recipient was educated at Eton & captained the Eton XI 1908 & gained a blue at Oxford for cricket. He played in 45 1st class matches for Kent before being commissioned in to the Royal East Kent Yeomanry. He served on Gallipoli & in Egypt before proceeding to Flanders. He was M.I.D for services in Egypt 12-1-1918 & awarded the Military Cross 30-7-1919. He was sadly K.I.A F&F 21-9-1918 during the fighting on the Hindenburg line. His MC citation is as as follows.
For conspicuous gallantry in leading his company during the advance at Templeux Gerrard towards the Hindenburg line on September 18th 1918. In spite of the hostile machine guns which repeatedly held up the advance. He got his men forwards, exposing himself fearlessly .It was largely due to this officers splendid example that the advance was carried out so rapidly.
