Hugh Campbell from Newcastle upon Tyne first landed in France 4-12-1914 & was awarded the Military medal for services in France in the London gazette 23-2-1918 & this was followed by the award of the DCM in the London gazette 10-1-1920 for his gallantry during the attack on the railway at Abancourt 1-10-1918 with the following citation.
For fine courage & initiative on 1st October 1918 in the attack on the railway near Abancourt. He, with a non commissioned officer, rushed two machine guns & a party of 20 men who were holding the embankment, killing ten & capturing the remainder. They displayed marked coolness & cheerfulness throughout the operations.
He was wounded in 1915 serving with the 1st battalion & this was published in the casualty list dated 24-7-1915. He finished his war serving with the Royal Engineers with service number 615763 & was discharged to the class Z army reserve at the wars end.
