Lionel Thomas Nutcombe Gould was born in Stratford Upon Avon 22-11-1893 & was educated at Marlborough college. He was commissioned into the R.G.A in 1913 direct from the R.M.A at Woolwhich. He first landed in France in February 1915 & was twice wounded serving with the R.G.A.He was seconded to the R.F.C in 1915 & after initially training as an observer. He went on to train as a pilot & served with 23 squadron. He was wounded by shrapnel whilst flying in September 1916 & in July of the following year he was given command of No-21 Squadron in France. He was awarded the MC for his services with the R.F.C in the London gazette 18-7-1917 with the following citation.
He has done consistent good & valuable work while co-operating with the Artillery under difficult condition. He always sets a splendid example by his exceptional pluck & determination. This was for services bombing the railway at Aubiny-au-Bac during the occasion when he was wounded & attacked by no less than eleven enemy machines. He managed to shot one down and was credited with one confirmed kill. He remained with the R.A.F post war & progressed to become a Group Captain during WW2. He was M.I.D for his services with the R.A.F during WW2 in the London gazette 10-3-1940 & sadly his son was lost as a pilot on a mission in 1943. He was placed on the retired list at the wars end and sadly found dead in a gas filled room at his home in Hertfordshire in January 1947.
