A very interesting WW1 British War Medal

Mungo McKerrow from Aberdeen was studying medicine at Edinburgh university on the outbreak of WW1. He enlisted in to the 11th service battalion of the Border Regiment / The Lonsdale battalion & received his commission in November 1914. The was heavily in the raid on bully eye trench 5-6-1916 and took many prisoners. He severely wounded on the first day of the battle of the Somme 1-7-1916 and went on to be awarded the Military Cross with a good fighting citation in the London gazette 27-7-1916. Due to the nature of his wounds he was allowed to relinquish his commission and return to university to continue his medical studies. He completed his degree in 1917 and took a commission as a surgeon lieutenant & served onboard HMS Armadale castle 1917-1919.
