Harold Downham originally enlisted in to the 1/7th battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers & landed in Gallipoli in May of 1915. He was invalided home in September 1915 & rejoined his battalion in Egypt in April 1916. He returned home in 1917 to take a commission. He was commissioned in to his own battalion 27-5-1918. He was mortally wounded in France 28-9-1918 & died of his wounds on the same day. He was a former scholar of Bury Grammar school and was the late son of John Downham.JP of Malvern Villas, Bury. He was 28 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Grevillers British cemetery, He has a good entry with a photographic image in the Marquis De Ruvigny's roll of honour.
