John Matthias Kelly was born at Peel on the Isle of Man 1898 and enlisted in to the Royal Naval Reserve in 1912. He was lost at sea 11-3-1915 when HMS Bayano sunk by a German U-boat off the Galloway coast. He was 34 years of age at the time of his death & is commemorated on the Portsmouth naval memorial. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Matthias Kelly of Peel, Isle of Man & the late husband of Lena McCall Bettie Alexander (formerly Kelly) of 40 Damamock road Glasgow.
HMS Bayano was a former Fifes Banana boat that was requisitioned as a armed merchant cruiser.
