To- 2-LIEUT.W.L.ANDERTON.
William Lyon Anderton was the 30 year old son of the reverend W.E.Anderton.M.A. He was educated at St Aubyn's school & merchant tailors school, London. He was a director of George Anderton & sons ltd of Cleckheaton. He enlisted as an other rank in to the 1/4th West Riding Regiment in August 1914 and was commissioned in to his own unit in January 1915 prior to arriving overseas in France. He was serving as the battalion bombing officer when he was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 21-8-1915 when he was shot by a sniper. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial at Ypres.
