Vivian Seaton Gray from Whitby, North Yorkshire was commissioned in to the A.S.C and first landed overseas in Mesopotamia 13-3-1917. He was M.I.D for services in Mesopotamia in the London gazette 23-8-1918 & left the services at the wars end. He was the clerk to Whitby Urban district council and lived at various times in both Staithes & Ruswarp. He was awarded both the 1935 Silver Jubilee & the 1937 Coronation medals for his services to the council & in the London gazette 9-1-1946 he was awarded the Civil O.B.E for his services as the former A.R.P area controller for Whitby. He was a well respected water colour artist & painted many local views. His work often sells for fairly large amounts in both provincial & London auction houses.
