John North Hewlett Brooke was educated at Hailebury college 1911 to 1914 and was a corporal in the cadet corps. He was commissioned in to the 8th battalion of the Liverpool Regiment / Liverpool Irish 26-10-1914 and first landed in France 1-5-1915. He was seconded to the MGC in 1917 and attached to the RFC as a pilot in 1918. He was slightly injured as the result of a plane crash 1 March 1919 at Kenley Surrey. He was attached to 7 Aircraft Acceptance Park Royal Flying Corps. On that day he was flying a Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2 (Farman Experimental 2) (Role, Fighter/Reconnaissance, Night Bomber, built by Royal Aircraft Factory) when it crashed due to engine cutting out at low altitude. The machine stalled on trying to turn back into the aerodrome by gliding. The aircraft may have flipped on touch down. The other crew member Aircraftman W Hughes received a fractured leg . Both were admitted into Brook Hospital, Shooters Hill, Woolwich.
London. He left the service at the wars end and was given an emergency commission in to the Admin branch of the RAF on the outbreak of WW2. Whilst playing Cricket for his station side 6-6-1942 he has struck on the head by a cricket ball and sadly died of his injuries whilst standing at the bar of the plough inn at Quedgeley. He was buried with full military honours under a CWGC headstone at Haresfield St Peters churchyard. He was 45 years old at the time of his death
