The recipient was a wholesale fish merchant working in the family business in Montrose & worked as a volunteer at the local rec cross hospital. He was called up as a conscript in 1916 but appealed to the board & stated that it would close his family business if he was called up for military service. The board sympathized but give him two months to get his house in order & recommenced that he should be conscripted in to the R.A.M.C due to his work with the Red Cross. The Military authority's had other ideas & sent to to the RFC to serve as a Rigger. He served with the RAF in Egypt in 1918 & managed to qualify for the Special Constabulary faithful service medal with Great War Bar prior to enlisting. He remained in the Special constabulary in the inter war years & was still serving in 1940. He may also be entitled to a WW2 Defence medal if he did three years service in WW2 with the Special Constabulary?
