Robert Williams was born & enlisted in Wigan and was one of the original members of the 18th service battalion of the Lancashire fusiliers. This battalion was a bantam battalion raised in Bury & was given the title of the South East Lancashire Bantams. He was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 15-4-1917 & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial. He was 26 years of age at the time of his death & is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of Zachariah Williams of 585 Bolton Road, Bamfurlong, Wigan
