2 BAR QSA, PIPER, 1st HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY

QSA 1899-1902 With clasps for Cape Colony & Orange Free State To- 2574.PIPER.A.SMITH.HIGHLAND.LT.INFTY.
Alexander Smith from Argyllshire enlisted in to the Highland Light Infantry at Hamilton 8-12-1886 & was appointed as a piper in I Coy. He spent all of his service at home & transferred to the reserve in 1894. He was recalled for service in the Boer war of 1899-1902 & served with the regiment in South Africa for 198 days between 22-3-1900 & 5-10-1900 when he was invalided home. He was finally discharged to a pension in 1903 & whilst in South Africa he had served on the staff of the 16th brigade.
