Joseph Needham was both born & enlisted in St Marys, Stockport, Cheshire. He first landed in France 18-12-1914 serving with the 1st battalion & went on to be awarded the DCM in the London gazette 23-6-1915 with the following citation.
On the 10th March 1915 he volunteered to take a medical officer by daylight to attend to an officer who was reported to be bleeding to death in the trenches. Subsequently he assisted in an attempt to remove the officer by daylight, which proved to be impossible, but another attempt by night by private Needham and the M.O Was successful, although the latter was wounded while getting the wounded officer away.
Sadly private Needham went on to be killed in action in France & Flanders 26-7-1916 & having no known grave he is commemorated by name on the Thiepval memorial. He is also entitled to the 1914-15 trio.
