The recipient was a regular soldier & served with the 2nd battalion in both India & South Africa prior to WW1 & served in the Boer war of 1899-1902. On the outbreak of war he was attached to the newly formed 18th service battalion of the Durham Light Infantry / Durham pals as a senior warrant officer. He did not however proceed with the battalion to Egypt in 1915 but went to direct to France in 1916. He was awarded the DCM in the London gazette 30-10-1918 with the following citation.
For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. Before our advance he personally supervised, under severe machine gun fire, the distribution of rations to the posts, ensuring by his devotion to duty that all men were properly fed before moving to the attack. When our objective was finally reached he volunteered to guide the ammunition carrying parties, under a severe enemy barrage, to the front lines, as the men were new to the country & might have missed the way. He was entirely successful in his arrangements, and the supply of ammunition was amply provided, he himself making two journeys in full daylight under heavy fire. His courage, determination & high soldierly qualities have always distinguished him in the most marked manner.
