John Coullie from Abroath was working for the GPO in Dundee when he volunteer for service with the Black Watch during the Boer war. On his discharge he decided to settle in South Africa & on the outbreak of WW1 he enlisted in to the South African Scottish. He was killed in action in France & Flanders 17-4-1918 serving with the 4th South African Infantry & is buried in Lijessenthoek military cemetery in Belgium. He was 35 years of age at the time of his death & his obituary was published in the Dundee Courier 4-6-1918.
