John William Short was born in Lancaster & enlisted in Oldham. He first landed overseas in France 28-12-1915 serving with the 8th service battalion of the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He sadly died in France & Flanders 22-2-1916 age 26 & is buried in Lussenthoek military cemetery. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Henry & Ellen Shirt late of the church inn, Royton, Oldham, Lancs & the late husband of Sarah Ann Shirt of Grove School, Haddens, Mossley, Manchester.
