Edward Smith was born in Cowbridge 8-6-1873 & enlisted in to the Royal Marine Artillery under the Alias of Edward Coupland in Manchester 8-6-1891. He served onboard HMS Monarch for the duration of the Boer war & was discharged to the Royal Fleet reserve in 1912.
