Robert Blakey from Rothwell was one of the original members of the 15th service battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment / Leeds Pals. He enlisted in to the battalion at Colsterdale in July 1915 & first arrived in France with the battalion 25-5-1916 in time to participate in the battalions advance on the first day of the battle of the Somme 1-7-1916. He was discharged to the class Z army reserve at the wars end & during WW2 he served as a captain with Stanley Fire Brigade / A.F.S.
