Gordon Bower was one of the original members of the 22nd service battalion of the Durham Light Infantry / 3rd county pioneer battalion. He was born in Leeds but both lived & enlisted in South Shields. He was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 23-10-1916 serving with D-Company. He was 28 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Bienvillers military cemetery & is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of Joseph & Augusta Bower of 104 Baring Street, South Shields & also states that the late recipient was a Handicrafts instructor with Durham County Council.
