John Charles Newman lived in Wandsworth & enlisted in London. He first landed in France 6-1-1915 serving with the 2nd battalion of the London Regiment & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 1-7-1916 on the first day of the battle of the Somme. He was 23 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Gommecourt British cemetery No-2 at Hebuterne. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Mr & Mrs E.C.Newman of 161 Elesnham street, Southfields, London.
