William Sommerville was born in Rutherglen, Glasgow & enlisted in Hamilton (Bellshill, Lanarkshire) He first landed in France 6-10-1914 serving with the 2nd battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 22-10-1914 just 16 days after arriving in France. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial at Ypres. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Mary.D.Sommerville of 73 Glebe street. Bellshill, lanarkshire. The recipient is entitled to the August to November 1914 clasp for the ribbon of his 1914 star & this is confirmed on his MIC.
