Ralph Melling from Southport, Lancashire enlisted in 1897 age 18 & served in South Africa with Q battery. R.H.A. He was wounded in action at Modder River 15-2-1900 however his service papers state he was wounded near Kimberley. He was convicted by court marshal 17-2-1901 & given 56 days detention. He left the army in 1913but was recalled for service in WW1 & first landed in France 30-11-1914 serving with the Royal Field Artillery & was again discharged to the reserve at the wars end.
