William Mason was born in Paddington, London 18-7-1878 & enlisted in to the Royal Navy 18-7-1896. He served onboard HMS Rattler 1901 to 1903 including service in South Africa during the Boer war of 1899-1902. He was one of only 76 members of the crew from HMS Rattler to be awarded the QSA. During WW1 he served onboard the destroyer HMS Tancred & was awarded the DSM for services in destroyer & torpedo boat flotillas in the London gazette 3-5-1918 for services during the period ending 31-12-1917. He was invalided to shore & discharged in 1921 after he injured his right arm.
