James Andrew Gilmour was one of the original members of the 24th service battalion of the Royal Fusiliers / The sportsman's battalion. He was issued with service number SPTS-2605 & first landed in France 15-11-1915. He was commissioned in to the 1st battalion of the Highland Light Infantry 4-8-1916 & went on to serve in Mesopotamia. He was awarded the Military Cross for services in Mesopotamia in the London gazette 26-5-1919 with the following citation.
For conspicuous gallantry on 25th October 1918. His platoon was acting as point to a vanguard at night when they suddenly came under heavy fire at close range. He immediately attacked the enemy's position, penetrating a high barbed wire fence and capturing the first line. He then pushed on and established a lodgment in the second line. His courage, ability & quick decision undoubtedly rectified and awkward position.
