Arthur James Ayres was born in Talaton, Devon & lived in Talton, Ottery St.Mary, Devon. He enlisted in to the 1st battalion of the East Kent Regiment in Fulham, Middlsex & first landed overseas in France 13-7-1915. He was wounded in the left arm 15-3-1917 & was gassed later the same year. He was twice mentioned in despatches for services in France in the London gazette dated 22-5-1917 & 31-10-1917. He was awarded the DCM for services in France in the London gazette 31-8-1918 & this was followed by the award of the MM in the London gazette 20-8-1919 & sadly both awards were posthumous as he was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 18-9-1918 age 27 & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Vis-En- Artois memorial. The citation for his DCM states,
For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. He displayed great dash & courage during a raid. He was first over the parapet & dashed on ahead to the objective. He assisted his officer in getting five of the enemy out of a dug-out, killing one & capturing the rest. All this was done before the platoon had reached the post. Throughout the operation he set splendid example to his men.

Thomas Ayres was born & lived in Tallaton, Devon & enlisted in Exeter. He was killed in action in France & Flanders 29-10-1917 serving with the 1st battalion of the Devon Regiment & was 23 years of age at the time of his death. Sadly like his older brother he also has no known grave but is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.
Both men are recorded by the CWGC as the late sons of Frederick & Maria.B.Ayres of Talaton, Exeter, Devon.
