Robert Cheetham from Manchester enlisted in to the Royal Lancaster regiment in 1892 & was wounded whilst serving with the regiment at Ladysmith 27-2-1900. He was awarded his LS&GC in 1911 & took his discharge in July 1914. He enlisted in to the 16th service battalion of the Manchester Regiment / 1st Manchester pals on its formation & first landed in France 8-11-1915 & went on to be commissioned in to his old regiment The Royal Lancaster Regiment in 1919. He was discharged at the wars end and when he applied for the issue of his trio in 1919 he was living in Levershulme, Manchester.
