Henry George Thumwood was born in Camberwell, Surrey & enlisted in East Ham, Essex. He first landed in France 5-10-1914 serving with the 2nd battalion & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders just 16 days later 21-10-1914. He was only 19 years of age at the time of his death & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Menin gate at Ypres. He is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of Henry & Annie Eliza Thumwood of 157 Rusken avenue, High street North, Manor Park, Essex. He is entitled to the August to November clasp to his 1914 star & this is confirmed on his MIC however the actual clasp is missing from the ribbon of the medal.
