Alexander John Kennedy Ayre served in the Dardanelles with the 14th battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces & in January 1916 proceeded to France with the battalion. He was wounded in France in February 1917 & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 26-9-1917. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Menin gate memorial at Ypres. He is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of Robert & Caroline Ayre of Paget road, Wivenhoe, Essex.
The 14th battalion A.I.F was known as Jackas battalion in honour of Albert Jacka the Australian VC winner who served with this battalion & was awarded the VC for services on Gallipoli in 1915.
