William Gosset was born in Hackney, London 5-5-1886 & enlisted in to the R.M.L.I in London in 1905. He was onboard HMS Cressy during the three before breakfast incident when the German submarine U29 sank HMS Cressy 22-9-1914 after first sinking HMS Abourkir & HMS hogue. In total 1500 men were lost with the sinking of the three ships and very few men survived. William Gosset was one of the lucky survivors & went on to be awarded his LS&GC in 1920 before leaving the service in 1926, He was recalled for service 1939-45 but spent all of his war on UK shore bases.
The group is mounted as worn & comes complete with copy service papers that confirm he was a survivor of the sinking of HMS Cressy.
