John Robertson was born in Wick, Caithness & enlisted in Perth. He first landed in France serving with the 1st battalion 13-8-1914 & was wounded in the left shoulder during the battle of the Aisne 8-10-1914. He was evacuated to the UK due to his injuries & next went overseas to Mesopotamia serving with the 2nd battalion 31-12-1915. He was slightly wounded twice whilst serving in Mesopotamia & was hospitalised on no less than four occasions due to illness & fever.
He was awarded the DCM for his gallantry in Mesopotamia in the London gazette 30-3-1916 with the following citation.
D.C.M. London Gazette 30 March 1916: ‘2nd Bn. Royal Highlanders (attached Bareilly Brigade, Machine Gun Company). For conspicuous gallantry in assisting to carry back his gun a long distance under heavy rifle and bomb fire. Only two of the team were left and they frequently came into action to cover the retirement.
He was sadly killed in action in Egypt during the battle of Arsuf 8-6-1918 & is buried in Ramleh war cemetery, Palestine.
