Vincent George Smeethe was born in Wiltshire 23-3-90 & was a resident of Maddington. He enlisted in to the Royal Marines at Southampton 1-10-1907 age 17 & served on a number of battleships. He was a bit of a bad lad & had several entries against him on his conduct sheet. On the outbreak of WW1 he was serving onboard HMS Invincible & was involved in the actions at Heligoland Bight. He went on to serve onboard HMS Zelandia & was eventually sent to serve with the 1st Royal Marine battalion in France in February 1917 for service with the Royal Naval Division. He was heavily involved in the action at Logcast Wood 22-8-1918 & was one of 17 Royal Marines to be awarded the MM for this action. This was published in the London gazette 11-2-1919. He returned home at the wars end & was finally discharged in 1929. He was no entitlement to the LS&GC due to his long record of misconduct. He was recalled for a short period during the Munich crisis of 1938 & at that point was living in Salisbury.
