Richard Walter Birkhead from Walton on Thames, Surrey was born 24-2-1917 & enlisted 1-9-39.He was serving with the 21st L.A.A Royal Artillery in Timor in the Dutch east indies when he was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Timor 23-2-1942. The Japanese invaded Timor 19-2-42 & it fell 23-2-42. He was held at Ambon camp & at Fukuoka 1b prior to his release 14-9-1945. He remained in the Territorial army & took his discharge from the R.E.M.E in 1953. He applied for the issue of his medals in 1992 age 75 & as such the WW2 campaign stars have the later bigger suspension rings which are correct for that period.
