Vivian Seaton Gray from Whitby first landed in Mesopotamia 13-3-1917 serving as an officer in the A.S.C. He was M.I.D for services in Mesopotamia 23-8-1918 & relinquished his commission in 1920. He was the long serving clerk to Whitby urban district council & was awarded both the 1935 silver jubilee & 1937 coronation medals in that capacity. During WW2 he was the district A.R.P Controller & was awarded the Civil M.B.E for his services in the London gazette 9-1-1946. He was an accomplished water colour artist & his works of staithes & Whitby do come on to the market & command good prices. He passed away in Whitby in 1949 age 57 whilst living at his family home in Ruswarp.
