William Gay was born in Langtoft, Lincolnshire & enlisted in Stamford Lincolnshire. Whilst living in Cwmbran, Monmouthshire. He served with No-8 Mountain battery of the R.G.A in India & went on to be awarded his LS&GC in 1912. He first landed in France 10-12-1914 & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders17-6-1915 serving as a Battery Sjt Major with No-6 Mountain Battery & is buried in Ypres Reservoir cemetery. His widow applied for the issue of his trio & plaque in 1922 whilst living in Gosport, Hampshire.
