Enlisted in the Royal Artillery initially for 12 years on 26th April 1920 aged 14 years 4 months, a schoolboy from Devonport, and issued the number 1414147.

He injured his right index finger on 5th December 1921.

Promoted Bombardier by 1930/31

Transferred to Indian Unattached List in India ?

Awarded the Army Long Service & Good Conduct in July 1941 (18 years service after the age of 17 ½ required) holding the rank of Staff Sergeant with the Indian Army Ordnance Corps.

Emergency commission, Indian Army Ordnance Corps as Lieutenant & Assistant Commissary 2nd June 1942

In the April 1944 Indian Army List he is a Temp Captain & Deputy Commissary

In the December 1945 Indian Army List he is a Temp Captain & Deputy Commissary
