A truly superb family group to three brothers who all made the supreme sacrifice in WW1
1) GVR 1st type WW1 Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) & 1914-15 Trio
To- 9026.SJT.H.LONG.2/.BORD.R
Henry Long first landed in France 1-5-1915 & was awarded the DCM in the London gazette 11-3-1916 for his actions at the battle of Loos 25-9-1915 serving with the 2nd battalion of the Border Regiment & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 1-7-1916 on the first day of the Somme.
The citation for his DCM states,
For Conspicuous gallantry & ability. When his officer had been killed he led his platoon with great coolness in the attack on the enemy trench, and later in a second attack.
He is buried in Dantzig Alley British cemetery at Mametz on the Somme.
2) WW1 Pair
To- 2325.PTE.W.V.LONG.W.KENT.YEO
William Victor Young was initially reported as missing and then his death was assumed to have been taken place 31-8-1916. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial & was serving under his new six figure TF number 245369 at the time of his death.
3) 1914-15 Trio
To- 70892.GNR.G.LONG.R.F.A/R.A
George long first landed in France 17-1-1915 & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 27-5-1915 serving with the 103rd battery of the Royal Field Artillery. He is buried in Vlamertinghe military cemetery in Belgium.
All three recipients were the sons of Charles.H.Long of Tottenham, London. Henry was born in Hackney but lived in Tottenham. Whilst both William & George were both born & lived in Tottenham. They can all be found living together in Tottenham in the 1901 census returns.
