John Hughes was born in Basingstoke & enlisted in to the Royal Artillery 20-5-1891 age 18. He served in South Africa 4-11-1899 to 30-6-1901 with no-4 Ammo col & finally took his discharge in 1903. He was recalled from the reserve on the outbreak of WW1 & first landed in Egypt 2-7-1915. He died in France 12-9-1917 serving with no-11 Ammo col & is buried in Mendingham military cemetery. He was 45 years of age at the time of his death & ordinally enlisted in Battersea, Surrey. The CWGC state that he was the late so of John & Alice Hughes.
