Harry Eccles from Salford, Lancashire was one of the Original Members of the 16th service battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers / 2nd Salford Pals & is recorded in the battalion history as the Pioneer Sergeant. He first landed in France 21-11-1915 & was awarded the immediate M.S.M for services in France in the London gazette 17-6-1918 & this stated that he was a resident of Salford. Only 8 members of the 16th Lancashire Fusiliers were awarded the M.S.M in WW1 & only 18 members of all three of the Salford pals battalions were awarded the M.S.M. When you compare this to a total of 175 Military Medals (MM) to all three Salford battalions you can appreciate just how rare the award of the M.S.M to the Salford pals actually is.
